Brad Isham
Brad became the head coach of the CY Torpedoes in the fall of 2001. In his first year, the team placed 2nd at the SWC AA meet, 19th at the 2002 YMCA Short Course Nationals, 1st at the 2002 SWC Long Course Championship, and 5th at the 2002 YMCA Long Course Nationals. The next year, the team did even better, repeating as the 2003 SWC Long Course Champions and taking 7th place at the 2003 YMCA Long Course Nationals as the top-placing team from all of Ohio. In 2005, the team placed 2nd at the YMCA Long Course Nationals. Brad started at Gamble Nippert as an assistant coach in 1993 and became head coach in 1995. Brad has twice been named National Coach of the Year first when GNY won the long course nationals in 2000 and again in 2005 when CY placed second.
Jeff Stueve
Jeff went to Fenwick High School and then to Marietta. He got his law degree at University of Dayton Law School in 2000. He swam at Fenwick through high school, coached at Miamisburg Swim Club for two years. He also coached high school soccer for two years. He currently is an attorney.
Bob Hiller
Bob is currently assisting with the Senior group. He has been a CY coach since 1993. He was head coach on summer swim teams in New Orleans in 1970 and 1971, Cincinnati in 1974 and 1975, and an assistant coach with the Cincinnati Marlins in 1976 and 1977. His three sons swam for CY and his son Cody presently swims for Northwestern University.
Aly Schmidt
Aly is a former Torpedo swimmer who went to Kings High School and recently graduated from Miami University. She still holds individual freestyle, backstroke, medley relay and freestyle relay records.
Bernie Dickman
Bernie began her swimming career at the age of 7 for Fairfax Swim Club. She continued to swim USS and age group for Mariemont Aquatic Club and Anderson Barracudas. She also swam for St. Ursula Academy earning four varsity letters and First Team all GGCL Honors. In college she swam for Xavier University where she was Swimmer of the Year her freshmen-junior seasons. She was team Captain for the Muskies her junior and senior years. Her senior year, she received Academic All American Honors along with the entire Lady Aqua Muskie squad. She began her coaching career at Madeira Swim and Tennis Club, where she coached the team to two PPSL Silver Division titles. She also coached for the CAC Seahawks. She left the Cincinnati area in 1993 and went on to be the founder and head coach of the SIYMCA/Batesville Stingrays in Batesville, Indiana. She coached the Stingrays to 4 consecutive undefeated SEISA Conference seasons and titles. During her time in Batesville, she was also very active and instrumental with the establishment of competitive teams at Oldenburg Academy and Batesville High School. In 2002, the Dickman family made a huge move to Paris, France. They returned to the US in 2005 and moved to Lebanon, Ohio. Her family has been part of the CY family since 2005 and she joined the coaching staff in 2009. She is married to Mark and they have five sons. Her philosophy on competitive swimming is simple: Practice cannot make perfect as no one is perfect. Practice makes habits… PRACTICE GOOD HABITS!
Jim German
Jim swam for GlenOak High School in North Canton, Ohio in the mid-70’s. He went on to swim for Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Akron. Jim began coaching in 1978 as head coach of the Canton City Schools USS Swim Team. He was there two years before moving on to the North Canton Ohio YMCA where he was the head coach for four years. Jim was the Men’s Assistant Swimming Coach at the University of Akron from 1982-84. Beginning in 1986 he was the assistant coach for Indiana (Pennsylvania) High School Boys and Girls Swim Teams for five seasons. Jim became involved with the Countryside YMCA Torpedoes as a volunteer coach in 2004. He has two sons. Jack is 12 and swims with the Gold group. His wife Liz is a swimming instructor at the Countryside YMCA. Jim has worked for Kellogg’s in sales for twenty years.
Bill Bothwell
Bill began his coaching career with Countryside back in 1992, where he spent seven years working with swimmers at all levels of the program. After taking a few years off, Bill returned to coaching in 2003 at the South Family YMCA in Kettering, OH where he primarily worked with 11-14 year olds preparing them to compete at the national level. Returning to Countryside in 2007, he brings more than a decade of coaching experience to our program, including his work with several YMCA and USA Top16 swimmers. He was recognized as the 2006 Southwest Ohio YMCA Swim League Coach of the Year. He is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati, with a degree in Exercise Physiology, although he currently works as the Telecommunications Manager for Kettering Health Network in Dayton, OH. He and his wife Stephanie live in Monroe with a house full of wonderful pets. Bill is working with the age group swimmers in the Gold and Blue groups.
Matt Koloseike
Matt was an eleven year competitive swimmer, who began swimming USS and age Group swimming at age eleven. He swam competitively in high school and in college at The Virginia Military Institute. During his collegiate years, he also became a very accomplished water polo player and was Captain of the VMI team for two seasons. Matt began coaching at CY in the fall of 2006. Prior to joining the torpedoes, he was the Head Coach of The Abington Gators in Clarks Summit, PA from 2004–2006 and as Assistant Coach from 2002–2004. While in Pennsylvania, Matt was also an Assistant Coach at The Greater Scranton YMCA for the summer programs in 2004 and 2005. Matt is a coach member of USA Swimming and is a certified Age Group Coach Member of ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association). He recently retired from the Navy Reserve and is a sales manager with Procter and Gamble Professional. He and his wife, Beth, have two sons, Chris (14) and Jimmy (12) who swim for the Torpedoes.
Cristi Rachal
Cristi started coaching at Countryside in the fall of 2007. Before that she had been at the Washington Township Rec Center, The WTRC Sharks, for about 13 years as the 8 and under coach. She also worked as the assistant coach for the Centerville High School Team for nine years, during which time the girls won the State High School Meet. In all that time, Cristi has also taught at Dayton Public Schools, as an Adapted Physical Education Teacher. In 2009, she finished a Masters in Education in April and had a baby, her second. The boys are Jackson and Thomson. Cristi’s husband Kevin is the head age group coach for Cincinnati Aquatic Club.
Denise Bailey
Denise joined the coaching staff for the 2008-2009 Winter season. She began swimming at the age of 10, in her home town of Hilliard, Ohio - a suburb of Columbus. She swam for the Columbus Hilltop YMCA through High School, and made the YMCA national team for three years. She swam for Wright State University, and lettered for all four years of her college career. She was voted women’s team captain her senior year. During the summers of her college years, Denise began to coach swim teams including the Hilliard City Team.
After college, Denise joined her husband in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the head coach of the Fairfield YMCA team for the 1990-1991 winter seasons, and coached the Fairfield High School team 1990-1992. After the birth of her daughter, Denise returned to coaching at the high school level and was the assistant coach for Seton High School’s team for the 1993-1995 seasons. She also worked in the Jewish Community Center’s aquatic department as swim camp director, assistant aquatics director, and the aquatics director up until 1997.
Although Denise has not coached since 1996, she has remained close to swimming. She has two children who swim for the Torpedoes and have been swimming since 2005. She has also remained personally active as a swimmer - swimming for recreation and a Masters team at Gamble-Nippert YMCA (1995-1996). She is delighted to have the opportunity to return to coaching, and to join a great team of swimmers and coaches. Denise’s swimming philosophy is one of concentrated pursuit of perfection of stroke technique and self discipline - the true building blocks younger swimmers need as a foundation for progressing with age. She also understands, appreciates, and is dedicated to YMCA’s policy of developing the whole person in mind, spirit, and body.
Su Burns
Su has been with the CY coaching staff since 1991 and has over 35 years experience as a swim coach. Su has coached the eight and unders at Countryside for the past 17 years. Prior to that, she coached for the Middletown YMCA for eight years as well as for many Cincinnati and Middletown area summer swim teams. Su is also the head coach for Middletown High School varsity swim teams.
Her competitive swimming experience includes 10 years with the Cincinnati Coca Cola AAU swim team (now-disbanded), four years with Cincinnati Oak Hills High School and four years with Miami University (captain junior and senior years). She was a NAGWS collegiate national qualifier her junior and senior years. Her sons, Brett and Matt, were National Team swimmers for the Torpedoes. In July 2000, Su was honored as SWY Long Course Coach of the Year, and in March 2003, was inducted into the Southwest Ohio YMCA Swim League Hall of Fame.
Su has a BS and MEd from Miami University and has been teaching physical education in the Middletown City School District for the past 34 years. She has also been employed by the Cincinnati Area Chapter of the American Red Cross as a Water Safety Educator for the past 25 years.
Su’s philosophy on coaching is one of keeping the “fun” in fundamentals. She also emphasizes the YMCA character development values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith.
Amy Sosnowski
Amy coaches the Bronze Group with Su. Amy swam for Fairfield YMCA, Badin High School and Rolling Hills Swim Club (where she still holds some records!). She also coached Rolling Hills from 1983-87. She was voted MVP twice while swimming for the University of Notre Dame. Amy and her husband Jim have 3 kids, Mandi (15), Matthew (13) and TJ (11).
Jennifer Stueve
Jennifer joined the CY coaching staff for the 2004 Long Course season. She worked with the Silver group before moving to help with the Bronze group in the fall of 2007. Jennifer swam for the Sycamore Flying Fish and played waterpolo. She graduated from UC with a degree in education and is currently teaching in the Little Miami school district. (And married our Senior group coach, Jeff Stueve, in 2007.)
Liz German
Liz was an age-group and high school swimmer in Massillon, OH and a national qualifier while swimming for the North Canton YMCA. She went on to swim throughout college for Kent State University. She’s coached age groupers at the Massillon YMCA, Elms Country Club, and at the North Canton YMCA. For two years Liz was the Assistant Swim Coach for North Canton Hoover H.S. After earning her master’s degree from Kent in motor behavior/motor development Liz went on to become Aquatics Director at the North Canton YMCA. Liz and her husband were transfered around the country and continued to keep involved with competitive swimming. While in Indiana, PA Liz served as the Assistant H.S. Swim Coach for three years at Indiana H.S. After another move she went on to become Aquatics & Fitness Director at the Mount Diablo YMCA in Pleasant Hill, CA. After several more moves and time off from swimming to start and raise a family Liz and Jim finally settled down in Cincinnati. Liz has been a swimming instructor here at the Countryside YMCA since 1999. Here she teaches swimming to preschoolers through adults. She has a true passion for the sport and throughly enjoys seeing her results through those she teaches to swim. This is her first season as a Countryside coach.
Pete Wagner
Pete joined the Countryside Torpedoes coaching staff in 2008 to work with the Bronze Group. Pete taught aquatics classes at the Countryside YMCA for 4 years. He is a certified YMCA Swim official and a certified USA Swim Coach. He was the head coach for the Waynesville Blue Dolphins summer swim team for the 2008 season. He participated on competitive swimming and diving teams as a child.
Pete has also been very involved in the Lebanon Youth Soccer program where he coached both boys and girls team for 6 years. He has also coached boys select soccer for Thunder United Metro; t-ball and baseball for LBSA; and is currently coaching a girls select soccer team for Warren County United.
Pete enjoys working with children of all ages to help them develop their true potential in all areas. As a swim coach, it is his goal to make sure that each child learns the proper stroke techniques; develops a respect for the water; and has fun each time entering the water.
